Ambien as a treatment for insomnia also has adverse effects which a patient should know. Because of these adverse effects, 3.5% of 201 patients receiving 6.25 mg or 12.5 mg of Ambien CR discontinued the treatment during the clinical trials with Ambien CR. Reported events which were mostly related with discontinuing Ambien were dizziness (1.0%) and somnolence (1.0%).
Generally the most prominent adverse events linked with the use of Zolpidem (Ambien CR) at a daily dose of 12.5 mg in 3 weeks were dizziness (12%), headache (19%)) and somnolence (15%).
However, elderly patients manifested a different adverse effect. The recommended prescription for elderly, debilitating patients is 6.25 mg which must be closely observed. It is also recommended that Ambien be taken before going to sleep and/or before going to bed.
